A day with Liam & Stephen...
“As the world keeps spinning around and the present, as we know it, becomes the past in an instant… promise me that you will love me until the end of time. Don’t ever let me, let you go.”
Personally, I don’t know what it feels like to be attracted to a person of the same sex and I am definitely not the right person to talk about this specific subject. But, what I can say for sure is… Love is Love and everybody is worthy of it. I’m also sure (because I was there and I felt it first hand) that the love between these two is something that many “straight” people wish they could feel... even if just for a second.
This was the first time my team and I covered a same-sex marriage; it was our first time attending one too.
The day began with the grooms’ preparations, then we moved on to the ceremony at the monastery and day became night. As the day went on, the emotions just kept on getting bigger and bigger.
One of the most emotional moments was at dinner when Liam’s mother gave a speech. Her words struck me, and many others, I’m sure. “This is my first time attending a gay marriage and, to be honest, I was expecting it to be a lot more sassy and glittery.”
It was as far away as you can get from that.
It is one of the purest displays of love and affection that the Crew has ever witnessed.
Trust me, you should have been there. Listening to Stephen speaking, being completely vulnerable about his life on a summer afternoon in the valley under the fairy lights even got me choked up -which I hardly ever do.
It was a reminder that people are fighting demons you would have never known about if it wasn’t for them speaking out after they’re done fighting. Just like they say… you really don’t know the world until you stop and listen to its sound…
If there’s one thing we took away from this experience, it is that if everybody was as connected as these two and loved each other as Liam & Stephen do, the world would be a better place.
